The event was supported by the authorities, who coincided in highlighting the importance of metal mining for Andalusia and the self-sufficiency of the community.

Seville, October 18, 2022.- The opening ceremony of the Mining and Minerals Hall (MMH 2022), the International Mining Show, which kicks off its fourth edition after holding the last one in 2019, took place today. The event was attended by the President of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno; the Mayor of Seville, Antonio Muñoz; the Secretary of State for Energy, Sara Aagesen; the Commissioner of MMH 2022, Javier Targhetta; and the President and Executive Manager of AMINER, Luis Vega and Priscila Moreno, respectively.

The commissioner of MMH 2022, Javier Targhetta, stressed the importance of this event because of “the opportune moment we are living in. A time when we need more than ever essential raw materials to achieve all the challenges associated with the Green Deal, the energy transition and electrification”. “Today, Europe is at a disadvantage compared to the US and China, two countries that have sufficient resources and have made significant investments to be able to obtain them,” he said.

“Therefore, more than ever, we need resources, investments and a robust public-private partnership to be able to be self-sufficient and meet the demand for these essential metals, such as copper, gold, silver, palladium, tin, lithium, etc.,” stressed Javier Targhetta.
For his part, Antonio Muñoz also emphasized the strategic position of mining. “The current situation is teaching us the importance of not depending on third countries for the supply of raw materials that are key to technological development and the change towards a more sustainable energy model and, therefore, respectful with the environment and the climate”. Muñoz also wanted to refer to the role of mining “as a dynamizer of the economy, positioning itself as a strategic sector that generates employment and wealth in Seville and the whole of Andalusia and Spain”.

For her part, the Secretary of State for Energy, Sara Aagesen, wanted to highlight this event as a meeting “of cutting-edge mining, which accompanies what is to come and which has to do with sustainable development. The pandemic confirmed the need to guarantee essential supplies, and the war has made it urgent for us not only to accelerate the ecological transition, but to do so with strategic autonomy”.
The event was closed by the President of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, who highlighted “the leadership of the region in a crucial sector for the economy, society, the present and future of everyone, such as mining”. Moreno stressed that Andalusia is a mining region “with a long tradition and leader in Spain in the mining sector with 40% of the value of national production, which rises to 90% if we talk about metal mining”. And he argued that, due to the current situation, “Europe as a whole has to draw up a clear, firm and comprehensive strategy in favor of our autonomy and leadership”.

After the inauguration, there was a tour of the exhibition area that occupies halls 1 and 2 of Fibes, where the authorities, among which was also the Minister of Industrial Policy and Energy, Jorge Paradela, have been able to see firsthand the activity of some of the exhibiting companies in MMH 2022.
