Bernd Schäfer, CEO of EIT Rawmaterials, will be the keynote speaker at the opening conference of the MMH Seville

Rosa Menéndez, CSIC researcher, will chair the Scientific Committee of the International Mining Exhibition to be held in October in Seville.

Seville, June 29, 2022 – Bernd Schäfer, CEO of EIT RawMaterials, will be the keynote speaker at the IV International Mining & Minerals Hall (MMH) to be held in Seville on October 18-20, 2022. With an in-depth knowledge of the metals and raw materials sector and a long track record, Bernd Schäfer became President of EIT RawMaterials in April 2020. Under his mandate, he has promoted the European Raw Materials Alliance to boost the competitiveness and growth and attractiveness of the sector, ensure autonomy of supply and reduce dependence on other international markets.

Promoted by the EIT (European Institute of Innovation and Technology) and funded by the European Commission, it is the most relevant consortium in the raw materials sector worldwide, with more than 130 partners including academic and research institutions and companies from more than 20 EU countries.

With more than a hundred entities and companies having already confirmed their presence at the MMH and more than 3,500 square meters of exhibition space reserved, the organization of the scientific program that will run parallel to the exhibition is also at a very advanced stage. Rosa Menéndez, a researcher at CSIC, the center she chaired until a few days ago, has been appointed president of the Scientific Committee. Rosa Menéndez, PhD in Chemistry with a recognized professional career in the field of research, is also vice-president of Science Europe and has received numerous awards for her scientific career.

Scientific program

Together with Rosa Menéndez, the Scientific Committee of the fourth edition of the Mining & Minerals Hall (MMH) is made up of leading figures from the sector, who have designed a congress program of the highest level, both in terms of the activities proposed and the relevance of its participants, with the aim of confirming the success of previous editions. Javier Targhetta, CEO of Atlantic Copper and commissioner of MMH Seville; Luis Vega and Priscila Moreno, president and executive manager, respectively, of AMINER; Miguel Cabal, manager of Geomatec and appointed coordinator of this committee; César Luaces, general secretary of Cominroc and general manager of Primigea; Vicente Gutiérrez Peinador, president of Confedem; Pedro Mora, technical director of Oficemen; Carlos Frías, director of Technology and Innovation of Cobre Las Cruces; Felipe Lobo, dean of the Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros de Minas del Sur; Manuel Regueiro, president of the Official Association of Geologists; Jorge Fernández, Susana Timón and Teresa Llorens, scientists from the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute; Blanca Losada, president of Fortia; Miguel Paradinas, corporate general manager of Técnicas Reunidas; Santiago Cuesta, general manager of the Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster (ISMC); as well as Ángel Cámara and Javier Elorza, professors at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, make up the Scientific Committee of the MMH.

The Scientific Committee has also closed the panels of experts that will be held in parallel to the exhibitors’ show, in order to deepen the topics of interest and current affairs of the sector. Specifically, ‘Raw materials and energy in the energy transition’, ‘Geostrategic challenges on raw materials in the European Union’, ‘Challenges for the development of the mining project’, ‘Social license, SG and sustainability’, ‘Innovation in the world of raw materials’, will be the titles around which will be discussed during the development of the MMH.

Organized by the Association of Research, Extraction, Mining-Metallurgical, Auxiliary and Service Companies (AMINER) and the Seville Exhibition and Conference Center (FIBES), the MMH is now in its fourth edition with the aim of consolidating Seville as the European mining capital and Andalusia as a mining region of world reference, in a context in which mineral raw materials have proved to be essential to meet the global challenges linked to the energy and digital transition.

The main companies in the sector have committed their attendance together with institutions and entities such as the Junta de Andalucía, the Confederación Nacional de Empresarios de la Minería y la Metalurgia (Confedem), Euromines, the Confederación de Industrias Extractivas de Rocas y Minerales Industriales (Cominroc), the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the Instituto Geológico Minero de España (IGME), the Fundación Minería y Vida, the Diputación de Huelva or the Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros de Minas del Sur (Mining Engineers Association of the South), among others.

In what will be the fourth edition of MMH Seville, mining and metallurgical and extractive companies such as Atalaya Mining, Sandfire Matsa, Cobre las Cruces, Atlantic Copper, Minera Los Frailes, Tharsis Mining or Calgovsa will be present, as well as auxiliary companies from the sector and from the engineering, renewable energies or services fields, such as Insersa, Mecwide, Subterra, Liebherr Ibérica, Metso Outotec, Agbar, Sandvik, among others. In addition, companies such as Master Drilling, Xcalibur Geophisics, Civilnova Solutions, Paterson & Cooke and Torsa will also be exhibiting for the first time at the Mining Show.
