Sustainable mining

PRESERVATION, CARE FOR THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT AND POSITIVE RECONVERSION

Mining, like the rest production activity worldwide, faces the challenge of energy and digital transformation. In fact, the mining industry has already been incorporating new processes with the priority of ensuring its own sustainability.

In today’s mining industry, mining companies are working to continuously improve their environmental management, making a commitment to sustainable production through policies based on the circular economy and the SDGs.

Today, companies prioritise efficient and sustainable management of water consumption by equipping their operations with the best available water treatment techniques, enabling them to operate with full guarantees of environmental protection and to increase water recirculation by minimising consumption from external sources. They also develop and implement procedures for calculating the environmental footprint (carbon and water) and the conservation and protection of biodiversity and ecosystems, as well as improving the current management of industrial waste.

Similarly, companies are studying new viable and sustainable solutions for ore processing through even cleaner technologies capable of recovering metals.

As a result, mining today is moving towards green mining, demonstrating an unavoidable commitment to sustainable and responsible production, and carrying out projects for the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems, as well as joining the fight against climate change. But this commitment requires a significant investment effort, hence the importance of having the commitment of public authorities through initiatives such as the European Mineral Raw Materials Alliance or the Spanish Strategy for Sustainable Mineral Raw Materials Industries, in order to guarantee the supply of key raw materials to successfully face the energy and ecological transition and the digitalisation of the economy, to reduce dependence on the outside world and to increase the resilience and sustainability of the EU.
